Very rare sterling silver combination vinaigrette - perfume bottle. Made by Tiffany & Co., Union Square, New York, 1872. Comes in original soft, named labled bag.

Measures 3 1/8 inches long not including the chain. Weighs 42 grams.

Amphora-shaped vessel, tapering to a point at the bottom, with cylindrical body and handles on either side of shoulders. Middle screws open to reveal the vinaigrette. Lid screws off for the perfume bottle. Chain attached to the handles.
The outside is decorated with applied wirework snaking vines and daisies, a popular theme in early Tiffany silver. Very fine detail.
The vinaigrette inside has a hinged, pierced disk in front of the hollow bottom of the vessel, which would hold smelling salts. The piercing is in the form of a ring of scrolls with alternating pierced holes in parallel bands. A small area near the centre of the hinge (highly magnified in the 'photos) is worn - it looks as though there might have been a hallmark there).

Opposite the vinaigrette, the inside has various impressed marks: TIFFANY & CO 2662 STERLING M 2669 UNION SQUARE. The M is the mark used during the term of the chief silver designer and head of the department, Edward Moore. Tiffany & CO was located in their Union Square New York premises between 1870 - 1905.

The perfume bottle comes in it's original, soft fabric bag with a lable that reads TIFFANY & CO NEW YORK and closes with silk ribbons. Amazingly intact after nearly 150 years.

The bottle is generally in very good condition with one or two pin-prick dents, perfectly natural for the age of this delicate beauty.

The original sketches for this bottle are to be found in the TIffany archives and can be seen in the book, Bejewelled by TIffany, (edited by Claire Phillips) page 147, part of which we show in the 'photos above.

ANTIQUE PORCELAIN PERFUME BOTTLE FIGURES DOG
Antique porcelain perfume bottle with cavoting figures. Made 19th century, Germany or England.

Measures 3 3/4 inches high.

Round base with a central pillar, entirely covered with applied foliage and colourful flowers.
3 people and a dog are modelled in a continuous scene around the pillar. A chicken perches on a nest forming the cap / lid of the bottle.
The scene is very likely taken from the Commedia dell' Arte with a crouching Columbine in brightly spotted yellow sheet, the fond lover and a scurrilous knave hiding on the other side, holding his dog on a lead (Pierrot and Scaramouche ?). The extreme gestures and poses are typical of these amusing scenes.

The characters are all brightly dressed with handpainted detailing & gilding to their costumes, hair and facial features. The stopper, is in the form of a chicken sitting on a nest - one wing slightly stretched out as though she is either precariously perched or shocked at the shenanigans beneath her.

There is not a clear mark. There is a raised section under the base, but it is not legible.

ANTIQUE SILVER LAPIS CHATELAINE WALNUT PERFUM
From the prestigious estate of Mrs Mary Timmins, well-known collector and authority on antiques, who lectured on the subject in the 1940's, this was one of the pieces she used in her talk on Women in Colonial Days.

The chatelaine is something of a tour de force: it includes wonderful silver and vermeil pierced openwork, studded with lapis lazuli; a gilt silver figural walnut holding inside it a pincusion that combines as a perfume bottle and a tiny mirror and swan down powder puff. It was supposedly made in France (according to the estate of Mrs Timmins), and is certainly at least 100 years old.

Total length is about 6 3/4 inches.

The chatelaine can be hung from a belt by the typical long hook, hinged to the decorative front for ease of opening or closing. On either side it has a loop, so presumably, it could be hung from a chain as well. The hook is hidden behind a star or flower shaped silver and gold pierced openwork jewel. It is studded with cabochon lapis lazuli, which gives it a definate Art and Crafts appearance. Scrolls and stars combine with foliage. A pair of chains comprised of similar openwork in gold and silver studded with lapis hang are suspended from the flower jewel. In turn, they hold links which suspend a wonderfully modelled vermeil walnut. Hinged at the back, it has a little button in front for opening it. walnut is approx 1 3/4 inches in length. Opening the walnut reveals a gilt tube with purple felt on top. This contains a tiny perfume bottle. The other side of the walnut appears to have lost a glass cover. WHen the metal frame is lifted, it reveals a small convex mirror and when that is removed there is a wonderful swan down powder puff in wonderful condition as it has been hidden and protected in the walnut for so many years. The walnut has engraved STERLING 925 on the inside.

Condition of the whole chatelaine and it's components is very good.
