ANTIQUE BLACK UMBRELLA HANDLE SILVERED GEMSET
Antique black umbrella with highly decorative handle. Sold to me as Victorian. May be a little later, but latest date is early 20th century.

Black umbrella with silver-coloured metal handle. Applied foliage and filigree decorations on both sides and unusual triangular terminal is set on either side with a large honey-coloured stone - supposedly citrine, but we assume they are glass. Old black tassle - very attractive. There is a single tear in the umbrella that can be fixed.

ANTIQUE UMBRELLA W GOLD REPOUSSE MOP HANDLE
Antique pearly white umbrella in original fitted 'bag' with hallmarked 14 carat gold and mother of pearl handle. Made early 1900's and has engraved date 1925.

Total length is 33 inches. Handle is just over 9 1/2 inches.

Pearly white umbrella has been kept in it's original fitted bag/case, so is in almost new condition (the bag has a few negligible age spots through being exposed).
The handle is engraved 14K in two places. We tested the gold to make sure and it does NOT test for 14K. Alternative mother of pearl panels and fabulous repousse
gold work - shaped, moulded, engraved, scrolls. Exquisite detail. The top is round and fits nicely into the palm. It has engraved initials DFC (C for Camp?) and date
December 1925.

Condition is good. One or two minor dings on one of the knopfs and minor wear to the gold, commensurate with the age.

From the prestigious estate of Mrs Mary Timmins, well-known collector and authority on antiques, who lectured on the subject in the 1940's, this was one of the
pieces she used in her talk on Women in Colonial Days. Sadly, she is not here to tell us more about it, but it was part of her personal collection.

ANTIQUE SILVER AMBER BAKELITE CHATELAINE PIN
Antique silver and amber bakelite chatelaine pin. Exact age and origin unknown, but looks like it dates to the late 19th - early 20th century.

From the prestigious estate of Mrs Mary Timmins, well-known collector and authority on antiques, who lectured on the subject in the 1940's, this was one of the pieces she used in her talk on Women in Colonial Days. Sadly, she is not here to tell us more about it, but it was part of her personal collection.

The chatelaine was sold to me as silver, but the metal does not look silver to me - it has a gold coloured wash / tinge. The pin part of the chatelaine consists of very beautiful scoll and engraved openwork. The design and fine detail are exceptional. A pin on the back would attach it to a lady's garment. This part of the chatelaine looks Victorian.

6 loops are attached to the bottom of the pin. Long chains hang from 4 of them. Loops at the bottom would have various household necessities attached to them. The loops have engraved COIN on the inside surface, which might refer to Coin silver.

The central rings have short chains that support a series of 3 voluptious, rounded disks. They look like amber, but are Bakelite. Mottled honey orange/gold/yellow/brown - subtle and very beautiful. The geometric shapes hint at the Modern Art Deco period, although the chatelaine probably predates this era. There are two chains with loops at the bottom of this series.

Condition is good.

ANTIQUE VELLUM FAN EVENTAIL PIERCED PAINTED,
Antique vellum fan with pierced carvings, painted bird and wonderful Nouveau whiplash frame. Made in Java / Dutch Indonesia and probably over 100 years old.

Total length is 12 inches.

Carved and openwork handle , forks into two elaborately swirling guards, tapering towards the ends. The fan is of the handscreen variety, with a
rounded pear shape. It is made of buffalo hide, transluscent in the solid parts, and futher carved and pierced in a tiny pattern of stylised flowers near the
bottom and a peacock tail fan with concentric circles of solid hearts, outlines in black ink. The painted bird in the center is probably a peacock (according
to the feathers), but looks somewhat like a vulture.
The tiny piercings are amazing in their regularity and show the technical skill of the craftsman who made the fan.

Condition: amazingly, the fan is not torn anywhere. The paint on the bird is rubbed in parts. The frame, which is very thin and delicate as it tapers, has
snapped on the whiplash bend in two places.(there are 4 'guards - two in front and two on the back). This would be a fairly minor matter to restore. Of note:
the fan has not been stored properly in the past and should be flattened by placing it flat with a weight on it.

ANTIQUE FAN EMBROIDERY SILK OPENWORK BONE STI
Antique fan with embroidered flowers on silk and openwork bone sticks and guard sticks. Colours indicate it was likely a wedding fan. Almost certainly Victorian, dating to 1880's or so, but exact origin is unknown.

Measures 19 inches accross tips of guardsticks when open; guard sticks 11 inches.
White silk ground of fan with pearly iridescence and lovely play of light due to the folds. Very fine stitching in tones of yellow, green and red foliage and flowers, mainly beautiful roses. Strong oriental influence on design of flowers as was popular during that time. The sticks and guards are made of real bone (not ivory), which has been very finely cut and has some openwork and some incised patterns. One guardstick was cracked and repaired. The sticks are held together by a metal ring and ivory buttons.
Condition is good considering the age, but the repair to the guardstick could be better and the fabric on the extreme left and crease on the extreme right are split/frayed. The lining material at the back is not in great shape towards the sides and should be replaced.

ANTIQUE FAN HANDPAINTED SIGNED SPANISH WOMAN
Antique fan with hand painted Spanish woman in traditional national costume, artist signed. From a collection of antique and vintage fans, this is believed to date to the first half of the 20th century, possibly a little earlier.

Sticks are made of simple wood except for the guards, which are ivory and measure just under 8 1/2 inches long. The right hand guard is decorated in polychrome color and engraved flowers and scrolls.
The flowers and scrolls are echoed in paint on the sides of the fan. In the center is a wonderful painting of a Spanish woman in national costume, holding a fan in one hand. The details are fabulous, from her extraordinarilly high hair style, covered in a lace mantilla, to the rose in fan and breast, the little shoes and of course, the fan itself in her hand. The painting is artist signed on the right.
Sticks and guards are in good condition. The fan itself, made of very delicate silk, does have condition problems, especially along the right hand guard and some of the other pleats. Fortunately, none of the splitting is on the painted woman, so the fan is definately worth restoring.

SIGNED VINTAGE HP SPANISH FAN FLAMENCO DANCER
Outstanding artist signed handpainted Spanish fan. Probably made in Spain, early 20th century.

Measures approx 20 inches accross the top & guard is 11 inches long.

Sticks and guards are made of brown laquered wood, held together with a simple metal ring.
The leaf is painted in gouache and depicts a night-club / dancing bar scene as is evidenced by the darkness on the sides and the barrels of wine. Brilliantly composed painting: the central area is bathed in white and yellow light and in the middle is a flamenco dancer, her white ruffled skirts disapearing into the white light cast by an old lantern. Her mouth wide open as she arches her back, arms thrown up with fingers outstretched in a classic flamenco pose. We can almost hear her call out and feel her feet stomping on the ground. Around her are musicians and audience, including other dancers: the men in black suits with big black hats, the woman with flowers in their hair, huge Spanish combs and the long, ruffled dresses of the flamenco dancer. Shawls thrown about their shoulders, they stand slightly out of the highly lit area, totally steeped in concentration as they watch the dance. The intensity of their gazes is quite palpable. As the painting progresses to the sides, it gets darker and darker and we see a fine palette of browns, purples and deep reds. The last visible character on the right is seen from the back only - a dark cape and hat fading into the mysterious darkness.
The quality of the painting is fabulous and it is clearly a wonderful work of art in it's own right.
The painting is artist signed F.SALVADORES under the word Sevilla. Presumably, it was done to promote the town of Seville.

Condition is very good with the exception of a split in the very end fold of the fan(over the guard stick on the left). Slightly rough edges can be expected due to the age of the fan, but they are negligible and mentioned only for total accuracy.
