Click for more detail...
726
REGENCY SILVER TEASET 1819 MASKS GARGOYLES Superb Regency sterling silver teaset, made London 1819 by Joseph Craddock and William Reid. Coffee pot is 8 1/4" high and about 10 1/2" from tip of spout to handle; Combined weight is 6lb 6.25oz - an indication of the solidity of this set. Each piece stands on 4 scrolling feet. These are attached to the body of the piece by a magnificent sun-mask, somewhat reminiscent of Louis XIV. The rim of each piece consists of a band of raised flowers beautifully cast and further engraved by hand to enhance the detail. The spouts are also covered in beautiful floral decoration. The coffee pot is pear shaped, while the teapot is a shorter version thereof. Both have original scrolling wooden handles, the tops of the wood are further carved into acanthus leaves. The joins of handle to body are scrolling, engraved silver. Both pots have magnificent finials on the lids. Each depicts a sculpted flower in full relief, surrounded by smaller buds, flowers and tendrils. The handles of the sugar and milk jug (pitcher) are magnificent caryatids or mast-head figures. They have women's heads, arching bodies in the form of acanthus leaves which scroll down to meet the bowl. Fabulous detail from hair to tiny hand-engraved leaves. Each piece is fully hallmarked:lion passant, leopard head, date mark 'd', monarch's head and makers mark in a quadrilobe mark: IC & WR. The set is in fabulous condition. Of course there are negligible 'dings' of the tiny variety that manage to offset the magnificent patina built up over nearly 200 years. The milk jug has one slightly larger 'ding' - about 1cm long, again, mentioned for the sake of accuracy. This set has been used, loved and enjoyed.
