RSTK AMPHORA TURN TEPLITZ AUSTRIA PAIR VASES
Antique pair of Amphora vases. Made by RSTK (Riessner, Stellmacher and Kessel), Turn/Teplitz Austria, circa 1899 - 1910. Almost certainly designed by Paul Dachsel.

Each vase measures 10 3/4 inches high.

Vases each stand on 4 simple rectangular feet. Baluster shaped, with a pair of handles in the form of elaborate, gilded foliage. The vases have 3 distinct sections:
the top, somewhat reminiscent of a bobbeche on a candlestick, with deeply carved botanical theme (flowers and leaves, buds and berries in stylised form). The long,
cylindrical body is handpainted with trees (orange and gold against a pale green ground), in what we believe is called the "Japanese tree motif", and can be seen in
many examples, in different colours in the book The House of Amphora, by Richard L Scott.
The bottom section is delineated from the middle by a raised gold line followed by a ring of sculpted flowers in great detail. The bottom consists of a magnificent
blue-green base with raised linear treatment, other examples of which can also be seen, page 158 in Scott's book. Almost hidden at the bottom is a moulded,
stylised floral pattern. There is a lot of gilding and gold highlights on all parts of the vases.

Many of the themes in this vase, from the marvellous design to the textured surface, imaginative flights of fancy, modelling and painting can be found in many other
examples of Paul Dachsel's designs for RSTK.

Each vase has a number of impressed marks under the base: these include: an oval with AMPHORA, an oval with AUSTRIA, a circle with IMPERIAL AMPHORA TURN, a crown,
another smaller crown, the numbers 11029 58.

COndition: generally good condition. The colours of the bases are not entirely identical - one is slightly bluer and one slightly greener than the other. This is the
natural result of handpainting. There is a fair amount of gilt loss, in particular on the handles, which are entirely gilded. One handle has a fine (secure) crack.

ANTIQUE RSTK AMPHORA VASE ROOSTER SPIDER WEB
Antique ceramic vase with handpainted and gilded chicken / rooster, spider and web and 3-dimentional openwork foliage and berries. Made in Austria by RSTK, circa
1899 - 1900 and almost certainly designed by Paul Dachsel.

Measures 7 inches tall.

Baluster shaped vase with elongated neck. 3 wings / handles float out from the surface of the vase. The neck consists of beautifully modelled openwork, overlapping
foliage and berries, one of the specialities of Paul Dachsel and RSTK. They are entirely gilded with very subtle handpainted gold detail. Their execution is quite
outstanding.
THe body has two wonderful vignettes hand painted and gilded in raised gold and an interesting choice of palette. On one side is a Rooster stalking through the
grass. In the background are tall bushes and trees, some hinted at in pale purple, others very richly highlighted in raised gilding. The chicken is wonderfully
portrayed in red, green and gold, with exotic tail feathers and tough stance. His open beak and strength of claws along with the arrogant strut, make it clear that
this is not a bird to be taken lightly.
Another section of the vase, with a lot of creamy ground showing, has a number of highly defined, raised flowers amongst which is a very finely painted spider's web
and nestling under one of the flying arms, a black and gold spider.
The bottom of the vase has a peach and gold Art Nouveau pattern.

THe vase has the burnt orange RSTK logo that dates to 1899-1900. Impressed 530 AUSTRIA and 13.

Good condition.

WIENER KERAMIK WIENER WERKSTATTE MICHAEL POWO
Figural lamp Michael Powolny made by Wiener Keramik and sold by Wiener Werkstatte, Vienna, Austria first decade of 20th century.
Figure stands just under 8 inches high.
Very rare black and white figural lamp. Stands on oval base with black beaded border. Putto leans one arm on a cornucopia overflowing with flowers. The other
arm holds up a torch, on top of which the lamp fittings are placed. Relief modelled roses and other flowers cascade from her hair.
Black and white were supposedly more rare than coloured examples of these Wiener Werkstatte / Keramik figures.
Impressed marks underneath show the WienerKeramik and Austria marks as well as various numerals, presumably model numbers. There is an indentation and tunnel
under the base made to accommodate an electric cord. There is a kiln crack in this tunnel, as can be clearly seen magnified in the 'photos. It cannot be seen
unless you turn the figure upside down and look underneath.
There is crazing to the glaze, but no chips/cracks. While clearly made to be a lamp, we do not know whether the current lamp fittings are original -
possibly something on the top of the figure's torch has been changed as the metal does not look original.
Note: The Wiener Werkstatte did not manufacture its own ceramics. It used mainly the Wiener Keramik, which had been established in 1906 by Wiener Werkstatte
members Michael Powolny and Bertold Loffler.
Note: We had an email stating that the factory that made this piece was Wiener Kunstkeramische Werkstdtte.Another emailer says Michael Powolny made by the Wiener Kunstkeramische Werkstadte. Thank you all.
