MINIATURE PORTRAIT FRENCH WOMAN LISTED ARTIST
Miniature painting on ivory of a woman in a garden. Signed and dated by well listed artist, Paillet, 1908. Gilt frame measures 4 by almost 3 1/2inches. Ivory is a little over 3 1/4 height, and a little under 3inches wide. Painting depicts a posing aristocratic-looking lady with gentle curly hair under a large feathered hat, wearing a sleeveless dress, a shawl with minutely delicate painted flowers draped over one arm. In her other hand she holds a basket brimming with flowers - dahlias, peonies - all exquisitely painted. One arm leans on a pillar, along with an openwork wall that hint at Greek ruins in an English garden. Large trees and vegetation , beautifully painted, fade to the horizon. The quality of the painting is exceptionally good - masterfully controlled brushstrokes, tiny details, great play of light and shade. Signed PAILLET and dated 1908. Very good condition.

1650 PORTRAIT MINIATURE PAINTING MAN COPPER
Portrait miniature in oil on copper, of a red-bearded gentleman, circa 1650. Measures almost 2 1/4inches long. Oval shape. Man with high forehead, balding, light red beard in dark clothes and white muslin collar. At this time, only royalty and extremely important people had their portraits painted in miniatures, so although we do not know who the sitter is, he must be a person of stature/high status.
The work is beautifully executed in the manner of the Dutch masters like Reubens and would look good in any museum. Looking through a loupe, we can even see minute details like his
eyelashes. Wonderful quality and a rare item. The paint has endured wonderfully and the work is in excellent condition.

MINIATURE PAINTING of LADY 1710 SILVER LOCKET
Miniature painting of a lady in a silver frame. Circa 1710, most likely English and bears a strong resemblance to a miniature in the book on the subject from the Metropolitan Museum of
Art (#101), identified as either Sophia Dorothea, later Queen of Prussia (daughter of George I) or, George II's wife, Caroline of Ansbach. . Measures just over 1inch long and 1 1/2inch including entire length of frame. Oval, painted on vellum in watercolour. The lady's blue eyes match her blue cloak, worn over a pink dress. Curly hair and fair skin. Painting shows great artistic skill and anatomical
mastery. Frame is likely original to the period. The bottom 'clip' of the frame broke off when we checked the item, otherwise condition is very good with no damage to the painting, which retains clarity and brightness of colour.

HP MINIATURE PORTRAIT BISHOP IVORY EXC FRAME
Handpainted miniature portrait on ivory in exceptional frame. Probably English, 18th century. Original, old frame. Frame is 6 5/8 high and 6inches accross. Ivory is 3inches in length. Top quality painting of the highest calibre - depicts a man, supposedly a bishop, wearing a strange headcovering, whether it is supposed to be a wig or a hat. Outstanding detail in the depiction of the facial features and skin - clearly a highly professional artist. The man looks out at us from under his wig - the artist has succeeded in showing us the wry intelligence and humour of his sitter. The frame is also quite exceptional. The ivory is shown through concentric bronze ovals, engine turned and beaded in various patterns. The top has a ring attached via a wonderful acorn and oak leaf bronze relief. The back has a little 'door', closed with a hook, opening to reveal a little cubby compartment. There is a very old paper stuck onto the back, possibly with the name of the artist or sitter. Condition is generally good. The ivory has cured somewhat due to age, but the painting is still in wonderful shape, as is the frame.

HP MINIATURE PORTRAIT DARK LADY ON IVORY 18C
Handpainted miniature portrait on ivory of a dark-haired young lady. Possibly dating to the 18th century. Lable on sticker says English, but it could also be Italian as the young lady is very dark-haired and wears coral jewelry around her neck and in her ears. Brass frame is 3 1/2inches long. Ivory is 2inches long. Beautifully depicted portrait. A serious looking young lady, her black hair in a thick plait/braid wound around her head, a curly tendril alongside her ear and more curls escaping behind her neck. Part of a red bow, visible from behind her, picks up the red of the coral beads around her neck and coral earrings. Very sensitive, delicate brush strokes and clearly a professional work. The painting is in good condition.

HP MINIATURE PORTRAIT IVORY WOMAN GREEN EYES
Handpainted miniature portrait on ivory of a woman with green eyes and with green ribbons in her white bonnet and black dress. In an oval locket frame, measuring 1 3/4inches accross (altogether). Very nicely painted blue and green background. The woman, clearly a middleaged housewife, with immaculate hair under her frilly white bonnet with it's bright green ribbons. The starkness of her clothes is alleviated by this green that brings out the colour of her eyes and changes the drab housewife into a beautiful portrait. Very nice brushstroke and paintwork. Generally good condition, but needs a clean under the glass.

HP MINIATURE PORTRAIT OIL ON PAPER FRENCH 18C
One of a large collection of French and American handpainted miniatures, most on ivory. This one, done on paper, applied to wood, is probably French, dating to the 18th century. Measurement of miniature is 3inches high. Frame is a little over 4 1/4inches high. Beautifully executed painting in bad shape. It has been attached to a piece of wood and the paper has buckled and has losses on the sides. Still, we can clearly see the high quality of the painting and the beautiful aristocratic woman in her powdered wig and layer upon layer of lacy clothing. Old frame of ebonised wood is probably not original to the piece and the painting was attached with a piece of tape at the back, showing only the 'good' part of the work.

MINIATURE HP PORTRAIT EARLY AMERICAN WOMAN
Handpainted American naieve miniature portrait in oil on cardboard of a woman holding a pair of gloves. Painting measures 3 1/4 X 2 1/4inches and frame is 7 X 2 3/4inches. A rich young lady had her portrait painted wearing a huge red dress. Dark hair looped around her ears and a golden band with medallion on her forehead. Wonderful peaches and cream complexion. She holds a pair of golden/mustard coloured gloves in her hands. She wears at least two bracelets and a ring on her fourth finger. Fascinating depicting of an early American society lady. The frame is gold-coloured metal, probably brass with attractive foliage and floral swags. A ring at the top from which it can be hung. On the back of the painting (inside the frame), is an old lable that tells us that the painting is American naieve and the old price was $1250.00 (my price is not close to that). There is typical crazing to the paint, which is normal and acceptable of a work this age (well over 100 years old). There is also a scratch on the surface, top right corner, very clearly shown in the photos. It does not perforate beyond the paint.
