ANTIQUE CHINESE ENAMEL SILVER HAIR ORNAMENT I
Authentic antique Chinese en tremblant jewelry enamel on silver hair ornament in the form of an insect - cricket crawling towards a flower. Well over 100 years old.

Measures 7 1/2 inches from end to end.
Fantastically crafted cricket, perched on a little wire, crawls towards a beautiful enamel flower, with long stamen ending in little wire-enclosed beads. The flower is attached to springs, so it bounces and quakes as the wearer moves her head (or from the slightest breeze). We believe there were originally two flowers, but the piece is very old and some allowances have to be made. Besides darkening of the silver caused over many years, the enamel and other parts are in good condition (see 'photos with all details enlarged).

ANTIQUE CHINESE KINGFISHER TREMBLANT HAIR JEW
Authentic antique Chinese Kingfisher feather, silver and gilt silver en tremblant hair jewelry ornament. A fantastic butterfly perches en tremblant with long feelers ending in little jewel beads (possibly jade), It quivers and shakes as the wearer moves (or even in the slightest breeze). ANTIQUE CHINESE KINGFISHER TREMBLANT HAIR JEW
Authentic antique Chinese Kingfisher feather, hardstone/amber, pearls, silver and gilt silver en tremblant hair jewelry ornament. Well over 100 years old.

Measures 5 inches long.
Beautifully crafted hair ornament made of silver and gold washed silver and then set with the vibrant turquoise feathers of the Chinese kingfisher bird and highlighted with red stones (hardstones or amber or Peking glass) and pearls. A wonderful floral arrangement, including papyrus flowers, iris, waterlilies are arranged in a Chinese urn/vase, set with a large oval red stone. (looks like amber, but we are not sure). A pair of twisted gold washed bars support a dragonfly, perched en tremblant with long feelers ending in pearls that quiver and shake as the wearer moves (or even in the slightest breeze). The dragonfly perches on little wires, so it is in a different plane to the rest of the piece, making it a fully 3-dimentional item. Another flower set with a stone above this. The ornament ends with 3 small flowers, each with a gilded center and finally, the little spoon-like terminal, not used for scooping up snuff, but for cleaning the ears.
The beautiful workmanship can be seen also at the back, which glows gently from the antique gold.
Condition is very good considering the delicacy of this item. There are naturally some losses to the feather, but less than one would expect. The craze for kingfisher jewellery and hair ornaments is supposed to have threatened these little birds almost to extinction during the 19th century.

ANTIQUE CHINESE KINGFISHER HAIR JEWELRY BUTTE
Authentic antique Chinese Kingfisher feather, hardstone/amber, coral, silver and gilt silver hair jewelry ornament. Well over 100 years old.

Measures 5 3/4inches long.
Beautifully crafted hair ornament made of silver and gold washed silver and then set with the vibrant turquoise feathers of the Chinese kingfisher bird and highlighted with red stone (hardstones or amber or Peking glass) and coral. Nearest to the bottom is a Classic Chinese urn/vase, set with a small coral stone. Above this, two plaited golden (gold washed silver) bars lead to an arrangement of flowers, one set with a large red stone (looks like amber, but we are not sure) and a butterfly. The flowers and butterfly are set on little wires, so that they do not fall on one flat plane, but have a 3 dimentional quality, as well as moving when the wearer moved her head. The ornament ends with a little spoon-like terminal, not used for scooping up snuff, but for cleaning the ears.
The beautiful workmanship can be seen also at the back, which glows gently from the antique gold and is almost more beautiful than the front.
Condition is fair to good considering the delicacy of this item. There are naturally some losses to the feather, and one hardstone is missing from the flower on the left of the butterfly. The craze for kingfisher jewellery and hair ornaments is supposed to have threatened these little birds almost to extinction during the 19th century.

HUGE MEIJI JAPANESE LACQUER BOX W PEOPLE CRAN
Meiji period covered lacquer box, made in Japan, late 19th to very early 20th century.

Measures 16 1/2 "L x 12 3/4"w x 6 1/4"h.

Dark brown/black ground on which are beautifully detailed figures and birds in a stylised Japanese landscape, with bonzai like bent pine trees, foliage and wavy clouds. Very fine detail - see needles of the tres, gnarled trunk and hair of people. The people depicted are a man and woman wearing traditional Japanese clothes and each holding a broom. Marvellous facial expressions. The woman's kimono and the eye of a crane flying past the large tree, are the only red colour in the whole scene, which shows amazing artistic restraint. The inside of the box has a faux-tortoiseshell laquered finish. Generally very good condition with very minor wear on rim and slight scratching underneath.

Made in Japan during the Meiji period - 19th - early 20th century.
Measures slightly under 2 1/2 inches in diameter and a little over 1 1/8 inch high. The box is made of ivory. The lid is richly inlaid with butterflies flowers and foliage made of coral and mother of pearl. The MOP and coral are further enhanced by engraved highlights. The inside of the lid is inlaid with a little beetle, appears to be made of a dark shell. The detail is so fine that it can only be seen with a magifying glass. Another two beetles are to be found on both the inside and bottom of the base. One in coral and one in mother of pearl. The box is constructed with a small disk in the center of the base that can be removed.
Condition is generally very good.
