Antique Japanese parure / set of mask jewellery made of porcelain set on silver. Early 20th century. We are told that this is called Toshikane. <P><P> Consists of a necklace with 7 masks; <br> Pair of earrings; <br> two hair clips; <br> two masks with long wires that can attach to any piece of jewellery; <br> one mask attached to a hoop. <P><P> Total length of the necklace is 18 inches.Most masks are approx 7/8 inches long. The big lady mask in the center of the necklace is 1 1/4 inches long. <P><P> Masks are made of the very finest porcelain and beautifully modelled, handpainted & gilded with fabulous character faces, representing gods, sages and other
traditional Japanese characters. Wonderful expression. Total of 14 masks. <P><P> The masks are attached to a silver plate, cut to fit exactly the shape of the mask. THe necklace is a complex, fine silver chain with one strand slightly undone. Most of the rest of the silver is made of wirework. <P><P> Some masks have silver standard and Japanese hallmarks on the back. <P><P> Condition is very good except for the single break in the chain (easilly remedied). No damage at all to the masks/painting/gilding. |
