Pair of antique Royal military figural candlesticks in the form a drummer and rifleman respectively. Made Germany, possibly by Herend. Measure 12 1/2inches high each. Each soldier stands on a white, antique-style pillar moulded and gilded to look Classic, with an N in a green wreath of laurels - possibly for Napoleon? The drummer marches forward as he beats a tatto; the rifleman strides forward. Both have large, German military moustaches and the features on their faces are very well modelled. Backpacks, epaulettes, garlanded hats also well modelled and subtlely coloured. The candle would be placed in the hat of the soldier. Underneath each pillar has a variety of embossed and engraved marks: A crown and shield within a laurel wreath, enclosed in a circle, very likely the mark of Herend. Incised letters and numbers. Very good condition. |
