GEORGE III MAHOGANY FITTED KNIFE FLATWARE BOX
George III inlaid mahogany wood fitted knife box. Made in England, 18th century.
Measures 14 1/2 inches to the top; 8 5/8inches accross.<br>
Rounded, serpentine front- voluptiously carved and enriched by more than 200 years patina buildup. Hinged lid matching curves of the bottom and then sloping steeply to the back. Original escutcheons and beautiful old hinges (original) at the back. Great colour and patina to wood. All edges have angled inlay with a lighter and darker wood, both along the edge and about half an inch to the interior. The bottom has a rounded ridge. <br>
The inside of the lid has an inlaid oval in the same slanted check as the stringing outside. The steeply slanted base has place for 18 knives and various carving and serving pieces. (28 places in all). Each slot is surrounded by triple string inlay as is the curving perimeter.
Minor restoration on perimeter edge, but mostly the box is in good condition considering it's age. |
