Outstanding artist signed handpainted Spanish fan. Probably made in Spain, early 20th century.<br><br>
Measures approx 20 inches accross the top & guard is 11 inches long.<br><br>
Sticks and guards are made of brown laquered wood, held together with a simple metal ring. <br>
The leaf is painted in gouache and depicts a night-club / dancing bar scene as is evidenced by the darkness on the sides and the barrels of wine.
Brilliantly composed painting: the central area is bathed in white and yellow light and in the middle is a flamenco dancer, her white ruffled skirts disapearing into the white light cast by an old lantern. Her mouth wide open as she arches her back, arms thrown up with fingers outstretched in a classic flamenco pose. We can almost hear her call out and feel her feet stomping on the ground. Around her are musicians and audience, including other dancers: the men in black suits with big black hats, the woman with flowers in their hair, huge Spanish combs and the long, ruffled dresses of the flamenco dancer. Shawls thrown about their shoulders, they stand slightly out of the highly lit area, totally steeped in concentration as they watch the dance. The intensity of their gazes is quite palpable. As the painting progresses to the sides, it gets darker and darker and we see a fine palette of browns, purples and deep reds. The last visible character on the right is seen from the back only - a dark cape and hat fading into the mysterious darkness. <br>
The quality of the painting is fabulous and it is clearly a wonderful work of art in it's own right. <br>
The painting is artist signed F.SALVADORES under the word Sevilla. Presumably, it was done to promote the town of Seville. <br><br>
Condition is very good with the exception of a split in the very end fold of the fan(over the guard stick on the left). Slightly rough edges can be expected due to the age of the fan, but they are negligible and mentioned only for total accuracy. |
