Antique fan with hand painted Spanish woman in traditional national costume, artist signed. From a collection of antique and vintage fans, this is believed to date to the first half of the 20th century, possibly a little earlier. <br><br>
Sticks are made of simple wood except for the guards, which are ivory and measure just under 8 1/2 inches long. The right hand guard is decorated in polychrome color and engraved flowers and scrolls. <br>
The flowers and scrolls are echoed in paint on the sides of the fan. In the center is a wonderful painting of a Spanish woman in national costume, holding a fan in one hand. The details are fabulous, from her extraordinarilly high hair style, covered in a lace mantilla, to the rose in fan and breast, the little shoes and of course, the fan itself in her hand. The painting is artist signed on the right.<br>
Sticks and guards are in good condition. The fan itself, made of very delicate silk, does have condition problems, especially along the right hand guard and some of the other pleats. Fortunately, none of the splitting is on the painted woman, so the fan is definately worth restoring. |
