Antique fan with embroidered flowers on silk and openwork bone sticks and guard sticks. Colours indicate it was likely a wedding fan. Almost certainly Victorian, dating to 1880's or so, but exact origin is unknown.

Measures 19 inches accross tips of guardsticks when open; guard sticks 11 inches.
White silk ground of fan with pearly iridescence and lovely play of light due to the folds. Very fine stitching in tones of yellow, green and red foliage and flowers, mainly beautiful roses. Strong oriental influence on design of flowers as was popular during that time. The sticks and guards are made of real bone (not ivory), which has been very finely cut and has some openwork and some incised patterns. One guardstick was cracked and repaired. The sticks are held together by a metal ring and ivory buttons.
Condition is good considering the age, but the repair to the guardstick could be better and the fabric on the extreme left and crease on the extreme right are split/frayed. The lining material at the back is not in great shape towards the sides and should be replaced. |
