Antique sterling silver snuff box. Made in Birmingham, England, 1793 by Samuel Pemberton.

Measures 3 1/8 inches long. Weighs approx 60g / 2 troy oz.

Oval shaped, hinged. The entire outside surface is richly engraved with joyous bright cut designs - floral and geometric and simply decorative. A rectangular cartouche with canted corners in the center has a monogram that looks like JA. Shields on either side are left empty. Even the bottom (underneath) is beautifully decorated. See 'photos.
Inside is in much poorer condition than outside and shows it's age/lack of polishing. However, the outside has a wonderful patina, the engraving is very beautiful and the hinge in good shape.
Hallmarks on top and bottom include a somewhat worn anchor for Birmingham, makers mark SP, date letter V for 1793.
|
