Antique French handpainted fan with central scene of a gentleman offering a basket of kittens to two ladies. Light pierced openwork Horn sticks and guards.
Made in France. Sold to me as 18th century - I believe it is 1800's.

Guards are 8 1/4 inches long. 15 inches accross when fully opened.

The leaf is made of fabric. It is finely painted with a charming scene of a couple of elegantly dressed ladies on a bench in a park, being offered a basket
of kittens by a young gentleman. The mother orange tabby cat walks at his side. Extremely fine detail from face and hair to jewelery of the women, who look
like mother and daughter. Of especial interest is that the younger woman, seated, is holding a folded fan in one of her hands. Old buildings and cottages are
to be seen in the background.
The vignette is surrounded by a park full of trees and wonderfully depicted roses.

The reverse of the fan has classic 18th century blue and pink colours on a cream background. A central medallion and scrolling borders contain clusters and
wreaths of roses.

The sticks and guards are made of a very light honey-coloured horn. They are cut into openwork balustrade pillar shapes and engraved with flowers and
foliage. Sticks are all present and in good condition.

The rest of the fan is in very good condition considering it's age and delicacy. Some wear is apparent with some seperation mainly near the guards at the
back. |
