The book on Robert Koch's collection shows a catalogue for this set, page 218 with the following text which describes the set and it's origins:
This set is decorated with fields of richly chased ornament relieved by a deeply carved band of ermines at the base of each piece. The style of decoration was used
extensively in the Sixteenth Century by Venetian craftsmen in making tooled leather objects. Reproduced in metal this ornament gives the rich effect found in East
Indian metal work. The finish is dull gold.

The quality is the best Tiffany had to offer. The rich design as described in the catalogue, shows how TIffany could borrow from a variety of sources and make
something so completely their own. Coffers/caskets echo the exotic Venetian and Eastern themes. Ermines amidst the woods, each in a different pose, show a distinct
Art and Crafts influence.

Each piece is marked with the TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK and MODEL NUMBER.

Condition is very good considering the age of the set. It was clearly used as the inkstains on two pieces show and there is the loss of one knop on the paperclip,
already mentioned. I found no dings/dents. |
